Lesson 2: If the World Were a Village
Preparation: Counters - enough for one per student. Also, you need room for your whole class to sit in a circle on their chairs.
Learning Intention: We are learning to understand how big a problem poverty is across the globe, and where we fit in to this.
Success Criteria: I can explain some of the biggest inequalities in the world, and reflect on my own life in comparison to others.

Introduction: Today’s activity provides a way to help us visualise global statistics about hunger, access to water and sanitation, and resource distribution. (This means how the world's wealth is shared.) It will help us to understand how many people around the world are affected by poverty. To set up, you need to make a circle of chairs. Once we are ready, you will all stand behind your chair. Note: The numbers in this task are based on having 20 students. If you have more or less you may need to make slight changes. |
Think-pair-share:
- What did you learn from this activity?
- What did you find the most shocking?
- Did this task help you understand how poverty affects the world’s population?
- Any other thoughts or reflections.
Class discussion:
- How did the majority of you (not the two standing on chairs) feel when I gave you the three tokens to share?
- How did those two people standing up feel when I gave you the 17 tokens? What about when you saw that the rest of the class only had three tokens to share between them all? Would those standing have felt any different if they did NOT know that the others only got three to share?
- It has been argued that this level of inequality is at the core of much of the world’s conflict. Can you imagine why this would be?
- Do you think there is anything we can do about the inequalities we have discovered today?
Journal Entry 2 - Title:"If the world were a village”
Write a reflection on today's lesson in your journal.
You need to include:
- What you learnt from this task.
- What were the biggest inequalities that you noticed (things that were the most shocking and unfair)?
- How this activity made you feel.
You could also return to the class discussion questions above and record any thoughts in response to these.
Remember: this journal will form part of your assessment at the end of the unit. We are looking for honest, thoughtful reflections that show that you have been listening and thinking!
